Samsung Just Unveiled a $22 Billion Plan to Pursue New Technology

Samsung Group said Wednesday that it planned to spend $22 billion to pursue new technology in areas like 5G mobile technology and artificial intelligence. The injection of money will be made over the coming three years and will be part of an overall $161 billion investment plan. That sum is 6% greater than the investment made by the South Korean conglomerate over the past three years, according to Reuters. The company said a substantial slice of the overall investment pie will be earmarked for South Korea itself, and that overall the investment will create some 40,000 new jobs. The plan, for instance, will boost Samsung's global roster of advanced AI researchers to 1,000.

The driverless car race is getting even more crowded. Samsung has received the green light to start testing a self-driving vehicle in South Korea. The tech company will be testing a car fitted with sensors and cameras, according to a government statement Monday. It will use artificial intelligence to study how the vehicle deals with bad weather and obstacles. Samsung is the the first electronics company to receive government approval to test a driverless car on South Korean roads.


Samsung just bought a potential Siri-killer from the guys who originally created Siri

Samsung just bought Viv Labs, the startup behind "Viv," a personal digital assistant that's supposed to one-up Apple's famed Siri in smarts, according to a press release. Notably, Viv Labs was founded by Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer and Chris Brigham -- three of the inventors of Siri itself. Apple bought Siri in 2010 before introducing it alongside the iPhone 4S in 2011. Thickening the plot even further, it was reported back in May 2016 that Google and Facebook had both made offers for Viv Labs over the course of its years-long development cycle. So while we don't know how much Samsung paid, we can assume it was competitive.

The digital assistant technology race is heating up, with Samsung announcing plans to acquire the open artificial intelligence platform Viv on Wednesday. It's an intriguing move, not least because it means the team who created Apple's voice-powered assistant Siri is forming closer ties with the South Korean electronics giant. Samsung makes a whole range of home appliances, so the acquisition suggests the company is keen to have them interacting with customers in the future. Viv will remain an independent subsidiary of Samsung.
